Dingell Calls for Stronger University Sexual Assault Policies

Today, Congresswoman Debbie Dingell (MI-12) released the below statement expressing concern for the increasing amount of sexual assault allegations at universities in Michigan's 12th District, including against the late Dr. Robert Anderson of the University of Michigan:

"Sexual assault cannot be the status quo at our universities and colleges, and we need to stop this from becoming a recurring trend in Michigan and across the country. All higher education institutions have a legal and moral responsibility to protect students who come forward with serious sexual assault and harassment allegations. There also must be accountability for when there are rampant reports of potential unacceptable behavior -- schools must be held accountable for investigating the facts, regardless if charges have been filed. No one should have to navigate this trauma alone and without the protection and support of their school.

"With both Eastern Michigan University and the University of Michigan -- among many others in the U.S. -- facing concerning sexual assault issues, we need to be proactive and vigilant to ensure each student's safety and wellbeing. I am committed to working with my colleagues, this Administration, higher education institutions, and students to engage strong systems that prevent sexual assault, improve school policies, and provide critical resources to survivors. This is an urgent need that higher education institutions must take seriously and address immediately."

Dingell has been a leader in addressing campus sexual assault issues, most recently writing to Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona to express concern about a sexual assault lawsuit against Eastern Michigan University.
